Hum work for the weekend
Students have started their Renaissance Change Makers project (yellow handout). Students will need to complete all of their research today and over the weekend. On Monday and Tuesday they will have a total of 3 periods to complete a visual representation of their change maker/topic.
Your
Task:
chose a change maker within the Renaissance
and complete a biography of that person, and also use this biography task as a
way to summarize and present your knowledge of the Renaissance as it relates to
the person and topic of interest to you.
Some
of the Questions will you need to answer:
What impact or influence on
Renaissance worldview did this individual have?
What impact or influence on
our worldview today did this individual have?
What importance did this
individual have during the Renaissance?
What importance did this
individual have on our life today?
What qualities did they have
which made them a Renaissance man or woman?
Were they truly great in
what they accomplished? Why? How so?
Their greatest contribution
in shaping the worldview of the Renaissance was…
Their greatest contribution
in shaping the worldview of western worldview was….
Use the Research Fact finding questions to help
guide your research
- Full name of your person
_________________________
- Date of birth and death ________________________
- Place of birth
_____________________
- Status: married, how many children, ?
- Education background, where
were they educated?
- Occupation _____________
- Find 10 Trivia facts about
this Renaissance man or woman.
- Find a 4 pictures of this
person and include details for each picture
- What did this person do that
was important in the Renaissance?
- What qualities did they have?
- List the work of arts,
inventions, books written, etc…
- Find pictures of the works of art,
inventions, books, etc.
- Was this person accepted at
the time for their Renaissance views, inventions, works of art or were
they challenged by someone or some authority that did not like what they
did? Explain this.
- Select their best work of art
you consider had the most impact, influence and significance in the
Renaissance. Give reasons for your choice. Why do you consider this person
as having the greatest contribution in shaping the worldview of the
western world?
- Keep track of your References.
REFERENCING HELP
A reference on your
source sheet should look like:
Author’s
last name, first name (if known). “Title of Article or Page”. Date of
publication or last revision (if known). Name of organization / company. Date
you accessed the website.
Website URL.
Example:
“Big Apple History.” 2005. Educational Broadcasting
Corporation. Aug. 23, 2006
Newman, Alexander. "Smart
Animals." 2006. National Geographic for Kids. November
23, 2014
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/kids
So a handy guide for sourcing is:
|
What is the authors name?
|
|
|
What is title of the article / page?

Science and Math Update & Hum today
Math
In math we have been investigating two term ratios. In class students measured their height and wing span to find their own height to wing span ratio. We created a bar graph of the class data to make some generalization about height to wing span ratios.
For practice tonight students need to complete MathLinks 8 page 51 #1-9.
Science
In science we have been investigating pressure and how pressure can be used to do useful work in fluid systems such as a car lift. Students were asked to complete the following calculations for homework tonight.
A hydraulic lift has 1000 N applied to an input piston that has an area of 30 cm2.
a) What is the pressure excreted on the liquid by the input piston?
b) If the force were doubled, what would be the pressure?
c) If the area were reduced to 15 cm2, what would be the pressure?
Hum
- completed a chapter 4 and 5 quiz (the exchange of ideas and the age of exploration)
- had one full class period to work on our picture books (The Age of Exploration - desire or means) - due tomorrow

Science
In class we are currently discussion the concepts of density, average density and buoyancy. For homework students should complete the following:
- Read pages 59-63
- Define Buoyancy, and Buoyant force
- Can you think of a force that would act in opposition to a buoyant force?
- In your OWN words explain the concept of average density.
- The textbook provided two examples of average density from real life ( a fish's swim bladder and a submarine) provide your own real life example of average density in action.
Math
We are coming to the end of our unit on multiplying and dividing fractions. Lately students have been working on solving problems that involve fractions. For homework students are to complete the first 3 steps of the problem solving process for questions 1-9 on their word problems handout.
Problem Solving Process
1. What is being asked of me?
2. Organize relevant information.
3. Make a plan.
4. Carry out your plan.
5. Does your answer make sense? Check your work.
6. Answer the question that was asked.

FAIRY TALES
Today was the final day to work on our fairy tale stations. Most students handed in their first task last week, and tomorrow their second task is to be done and brought to class. We will use some time tomorrow to peer and self edit and revise one of the story tasks. Each student will receive a checklist for their overall writing (content, organization, sentence structure, vocabulary, conventions) and how they incorporated fairy tale elements.
Ebola article
We read an article regarding Ebola. We will continue this work tomorrow.

The major task they are working on currently is to represent
a day in the life of a person in the middle ages. You can choose to be a
character from the feudal system (a King, Lord, Noble, Knight, peasant, serf,
shopkeeper, merchant, woman) or the Church (the Pope, Bishop, Archbishop, Cardinal,
Priest, or Nun, Parishioner).
Choices are to
represent a day in the life of one of those characters through a a journal
entry.
The task must include specific
details about:
-
what
they did on a regular day/ day to day activities
-
what power they held (show your understanding of the Feudal system)
- what daily roles and responsibilities (duties) (connect to the Feudal system)
-
what they ate
-
how they dressed
-
relationships with others and offer points of view
(how others in the feudal system see them, treat them , etc.)
-
where they lived
-
their beliefs and values (connect to the elements of worldview)

Students finished watching A Knight's Tale in Humanities today. With the movie, students discussed anachronisms and how the elements of worldview connected to the Middle Ages (via the movie). We began our discussion of the Middle Ages and the Feudal System. This work will continue tomorrow.
Homework - students need to complete their group and self assessment for the element of worldview task. This must be handed in tomorrow. As well, all journals will be handed in tomorrow so they can be assessed over the weekend.

Humanities
Today we continued our discussion regarding WORLDVIEW. Students extended their understanding of how worldview is affected in terms of Isolation > Contact (Inter-cultural contact) > Change and we watched an excerpt from the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy. Worldview, the elements of and the factors which affect it, is a theme that will flow throughout our entire grade 8 Humanities.
Parents - Students have completed work in their visual journals and will continue to do so often in Hum. Please ask your student about their journals and use it as a way to communicate what they are learning and why.
Also, in preparation for our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 26, students worked within a group to create a graffiti task of words to represent Terry Fox and his legacy. If this was not completed during class time today, it is homework and due for Monday.
Math
For the past week we have been investigating multiplication with integers. Students have been challenged to think about what multiplication means, how they can model it, and practicing computations. On Thursday they were given as assessment that is to be completed and handed in for Monday. A copy of this assessment can be found on D2L.
Science
In science we have been looking at how all matter can be classified as either a pure substance, homogeneous mixture, or a heterogeneous mixture. Student's worked on a lab activity where they had to make detailed observations about 16 substances and decide, based on their observations, weather the substance was a pure substance, a homogeneous mixture, or a heterogeneous mixture. A major component of this lab was providing a logical reason for their choice. This table needs to be completed for Monday.

Welcome Back
Welcome back 8-1, we are so happy to have you in our classes this year. We know you have your own personal goals for this school year and this space is here to help you meet them. D2L will still be an important place to find documents, links, and a calendar but here on the blog is where your homework and updated information about the work we do in classes will appear. Science, Math, and Humanities will all post on this one blog and share one D2L space. Stay posted for more information!
