Humanities:

Students have learned about the Elements of Worldview. Much of their work is in their journals.

Homework (if not completed in class today) - Worldview (1 element) group visual
- students have worked for 4 class periods on this task and it is due tomorrow. Groups will present their visual to the class.
- visual has a space of 31 inches (h) x 43 inches (w)
In a group of 3 or 4, create a visual to show your understanding of worldview. Each group will receive ONE element to create a visual for.
Expectations of Worldview Element visual & what needs to be completed:
1.      Define the element of worldview in your own words
2.      Answer – “How does the element affect worldview?
3.      Give an example
4.      Each person provide a symbol representative of the element
5.      You will be presenting your visual to the class

6.      You have 2 classes to work on this task

Homework

Science
Complete the analysis and conclusion questions for the Inspector's Corner Lab.  Due tomorrow.

1. What is the difference between a mixture and a pure substance?

2. Below is a list of some examples of matter. Classify each example as a heterogeneous mixture, a homogeneous mixture, or a pure substance. Explain your classification in each case.

A) Chocolate chip cookies

B) Coffee with cream.

C) aluminum foil

D) Potting soil

E) Gold medal

3. Create a flowchart that would help you classify matter into heterogeneous mixtures, homogeneous mixtures or pure substances. Review the flow chart on page 13. Test your flow chart using examples in question 2.

4. What particular uses can you think of for chromatography

Humanities

Today we continued our discussion regarding WORLDVIEW. Students extended their understanding of how worldview is affected in terms of Isolation > Contact (Inter-cultural contact) > Change and we watched an excerpt from the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy. Worldview, the elements of and the factors which affect it, is a theme that will flow throughout our entire grade 8 Humanities.

Parents - Students have completed work in their visual journals and will continue to do so often in Hum. Please ask your student about their journals and use it as a way to communicate what they are learning and why.

Also, in preparation for our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 26, students worked within a group to create a graffiti task of words to represent Terry Fox and his legacy. If this was not completed during class time today, it is homework and due for Monday.

Math

For the past week we have been investigating multiplication with integers.  Students have been challenged to think about what multiplication means, how they can model it, and practicing computations.  On Thursday they were given as assessment that is to be completed and handed in for Monday.  A copy of this assessment can be found on D2L.

Science

In science we have been looking at how all matter can be classified as either a pure substance, homogeneous mixture, or a heterogeneous mixture.  Student's worked on a lab activity where they had to make detailed observations about 16 substances and decide, based on their observations, weather the substance was a pure substance, a homogeneous mixture, or a heterogeneous mixture.  A major component of this lab was providing a logical reason for their choice. This table needs to be completed for Monday.

Welcome Back

Welcome back 8-1, we are so happy to have you in our classes this year.  We know you have your own personal goals for this school year and this space is here to help you meet them.  D2L will still be an important place to find documents, links, and a calendar but here on the blog is where your homework and updated information about the work we do in classes will appear.  Science, Math, and Humanities will all post on this one blog and share one D2L space.  Stay posted for more information!
